- Igor - 7/10 - Igor wants to be an evil scientist, but is relegated to sidekick role because of his hunchback. He soon gets his opportunity when the Evil Science Fair rolls around when his mad scientist meets with an accident. This isn't a great animated movie, but I did enjoy it.

- Sons and Lovers - 8.5/10 - Dean Stockwell stars as Paul Morel, a young man from a coal mining family who wants to become an artist, but his strong ties with his mother overshadow his relationships with women and keep him from attaining his freedom. Trevor Howard is excellent as Paul's father, a coarse coal miner. This is a nice adaptation of the DH Lawrence story.

Avatar was nice, especially in 3-d, though the effects were better than the story. I liked the story, but it wasn't anything special.

- Up In the Air - 9/10 - George Clooney stars as a man whose job is to travel around the country firing people. He travels nearly the entire year and lives out of a suitcase. And then his company grounds him and plans to bring in a new method of letting people go. I liked this movie a lot. It has humor, family, relationships and is very well done.

- Five Star Final - 8/10 - Edward G. Robinson stars as a newspaper editor who agrees to do a series of stories about a 20 year old murder case in order to boost sales. However, bringing up the old story causes harm to the woman who was acquitted of the murder and to her daughter, who is about to get married. The film is an indictment on the methods tabloids sometimes go to in order to increase circulation. I enjoyed the film a lot and think it holds up very well.

- Smilin' Through (1932) - 8/10 - When his friends die at sea, Sir John adopts their young daughter, Kathleen. She grows up to look just like Sir John's bride, Moonyeen, who was murdered on their wedding night 50 years earlier. Kathleen falls in love with the Kenneth Wayne, the son of the man who murdered Moonyeen and this causes a number of problems, especially since he is due to go off to fight in World War I. The movie is very well done, including the flashback scenes and the ghostly visits by Moonyeen.

- Planet 51 - 7/10 - An astronaut from Earth lands on a distant planet only to find that the natives have a society much like that of America in the 1950s. However, he is the alien and needs the help of a local boy to evade capture. The movie wasn't really anything special, but I liked it. It was an entertaining movie and had a few nice pop culture references.

- The House of Rothschild - 7/10 - This movie tells the story of how the Rothschild family rose from the Jewish Ghetto in Frankfurt to their role as powerful and wealthy bankers throughout Europe. Quite a few liberties are taken with the story and the ages of characters so that the movie is probably more fiction than fact, but it is still a decent movie and features one of the earliest color sequences in film at the end of the picture.

- Twilight - 7/10 - I thought the movie did a nice job adapting the book in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, it lacked the intensity of the book and the two principal characters seemed a bit disinterested at times. Still, it wasn't a bad movie and I may have even enjoyed it even more had I not read the book.

- 9 - 7/10 - A band of tiny rag doll robots try to survive in a postapocalyptic world where evil machines try to hunt them down. I enjoyed it, but there wasn't really a lot to the movie. It was over pretty quickly.

:8510:
- Fort Apache - 8.5/10 - Colonel Owen Thursday arrives to take over Fort Apache and tries to do things his way, ignoring the advice of the veterans at the fort. Unfortunately, he's kind of an idiot and a haughty one at that. Henry Fonda is convincing as the sad sack colonel, Shirley Temple plays his daughter and John Wayne is the second in command at Fort Apache, a man who doesn't see eye to eye with the colonel. A very nice western from John Ford.

- Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - 7/10 - Darren Shan and a friend go to a freak show where they meet a vampire who later makes Darren his assistant. A rival group of vampires known as the Vampaneze are also after Darren in an attempt to recruit him. The freaks in the freak show were pretty interesting and the movie wasn't too bad. I'd probably watch a sequel if they make one.

- Angels and Demons - 7/10 - The Pope dies and while the Cardinals meet to elect a new Pope, a threat emerges that may destroy the Vatican. Professor Langdon is called in to help solve the case and end the threat. There is plenty of action, but unfortunately the movie was kind of dull throughout much of it. I liked The Da Vinci Code a lot more.

- Broadcast News - 7.5/10 - The story of two rival reporters and their female producer. The trio forms a romantic and emotional triangle as their lives intertwine. The movie was pretty decent overall - pretty low key with no major drama other than the romantic entanglements.
